Public Forum GM crops - the risks and benefits Genetically Modified (GM) canola was grown in Australia for the first time in 2008. With the 2009 canola planting season fast approaching, the Australian farming community is at a cross roads. Before Australian farmers decide that want to go down the GM path or not, they should be aware of all the potential benefits and risks associated with growing GM food crops. These public forums will provide an important opportunity to talk directly with farmers from North America, where GM crops have been grown commercially for more than a decade. The speakers will discuss issues such as perceived benefits and risks, costs, segregation of GM crops, legal concerns and the market response to GM food. Speakers include: Moe Parr - a seed cleaner from Indiana in the USA who was recently sued by Monsanto. The company alleged that he 'aided, abetted and encouraged' farmers to breach Monsantos' pantent by cleaning their seed. Ross Murray - a third generation seed grower and grain cleaner from Young, Saskatchewan, Canada.
