Bessie Rischbieth Conservation Award Recipient 2004 Dr Harry Cohen
Dr Harry Cohen was a leader of the peace movement in the 1980’s and the 1990’s and established and led the Medical Association for the Prevention of War at a State and national level. Harry was also a leader in the successful campaign against uranium mining in WA and he played a prominent role in the campaign to clean up radioactive pollution in the WA mineral sands industry and in the Rhone-Poulenc rare earths plant and the Pangea nuclear waste dump. Since 1990 Harry has taken a leading role in Sustainable Population Australia and has been the state and national President of this group, which has done so much to raise public awareness about the impacts of population growth on the environment. Harry also has a demanding job as director of gynaecology at King Edward Memorial Hospiptal and has also been very active in the debate about health issues in WA. He was president of the Conservation Council of WA between 1995-1998 and 2001-2002 and a member of the Executive Committee from 1993-2004.
