Bessie Rischbieth Conservation Award Recipient 2005 Dennis Beros
Dennis Beros has been involved in environmental activism for many years, and no doubt he’ll be involved for many more. Dennis will always be known for his leadership in the Save Ningaloo Campaign when he led the way to protecting the reef and coast from the blight of a massive resort and marina. Recognising that stopping a development is only part of a campaign, Dennis has been heavily involved in regional land use planning on the Ningaloo coast which has set new standards in sustainable planning. Dennis was also instrumental in the protection of Ningaloo’s reef and biodiversity through the extension of the marine parks and an increase in the size of its sanctuary zones which now cover 34% of the park’s area. Dennis was central to the establishment of the Marine Conservation Society Group and most recently the Stop the Toad campaign. His use of technology has helped take environmental campaigns to a broad spectrum of people (local, national and international), all at minimal cost. Dennis has had a strong involvement in the Conservation Council of WA, serving on its Executive Committee at various stages. His creative spirit and enthusiasm have been vital in building the capacity of the Council to where it is today. In his commitment to conservation Dennis has influenced and inspired many people. He leads by example and is renowned for working long hours, often focusing on the most strategic level while maintaining an unyielding attention to detail.
