Walk Against Warming 2010

Walk Against Warming was a huge success with thousands of you coming down to the Esplanade Reserve in Fremantle to hear John Butler. The Brow Horn Orchestra played some fantastic tunes and also kept the Political Power Debaters in check on two Trombones and a Sousaphone!  We wound up the day with over 3,000 of you planting a giant sea of renewable energy windmills onto a massive map of WA.

You all sent a very clear message for the coming election that you’re not happy about the current direction our governments are taking us on climate change. During the Political Power Debate when the representatives from the three major parties were asked what they were going to do in the next term of government to make sure our emissions start falling, we were all very vocal when it was clear we were hearing empty rhetoric...and the timekeeping brass section were not afraid to cut across any waffle!

A big thanks goes to all the volunteers and supporters who gave their time, creativity and energy to help the Conservation Council of WA run this event. A special thanks goes to our patron Josh Byrne (Gardening Australia) who MC’d the event, John Butler who donated his time and talent to play for us and the Brow Horn Orchestra who wrapped up the day on a high note.

Walk Against Warming 2010 was all about promoting the solutions to climate change with renewable energy and community and doing it together while having fun at the same time. A great time was had by all and the message was very clear that climate change is top of the list when we go to the ballot box in the coming days.

Congratulations

To Venetia Marshall from Gledhow who won the prize for a windmill planted on the day – a $400 voucher to spend at www.oneearthoutlet.com.au!

Thank you

To our sponsors for helping to make this event such a success.

Keep walking

A big thank you to everyone who came on the day, and all those from across WA who sent through their messages to appear on a windmill for the renewable powered map of WA.

As you may know, Walk Against Warming is part of our ongoing Renewable Energy Campaign and with the recent announcement that the Barnett Government has approved a massive expansion in highly polluting coal power here in WA, our real work is just beginning.

Did you know that just $1 per day can provide much needed funding to help us to stop the coal expansion by preparing legal challenges, exposing them in the media, and cutting off their financial lifelines by putting pressure on the banks not to fund them. At the same time we are working hard to prove that renewable energy can fill the gap.
