Conservation Week is the largest community focused environmental event in WA.
During Conservation Week, communities all over WA celebrate our unique environment and promote action towards building a sustainable future. The aim of Conservation Week is to highlight issues facing the environment in our State and to celebrate the work of conservation organisations, community groups and individuals all across WA.
Conservation Week is a great opportunity to showcase your group or organisation and the fantastic work local communities are doing to protect the environment and communicate the importance of environmental protection.
This year Conservation Week is all about biodiversity, to coincide with the United Nations International Year of Biodiversity. Biodiversity is the variety of life on Earth. People everywhere depend upon biodiversity for their livelihoods, their quality of life and to provide the basic ecological services on which all life depends.
Biodiversity is disappearing faster than ever before; in WA alone we are losing wetlands the size of 2 football pitches every day. This year, conservation Week will remind us that we are also an integral part of biodiversity on earth, but uniquely we have the power to protect or destroy it. That’s why this year’s Conservation Week is all about “You in the Environment”. How to get involved:
Community groups, environmental organisations, schools, local business and individuals are all invited to participate by registering an event already happening during the week or to consider organising a special event that communicates the importance of a healthy environment.
Here are a few ideas for events, projects or activities that you could organise:
A walk or cycle to school or walk A tree planting/weeding/clean up of your local bushland reserve Host an environmental themed display at your school or local library Invite a guest speaker to your school or local library Present a guided walk/seminar or workshop with an environmental theme Simply host a celebration of your group’s achievements in protecting the environment
